Get to Know Me Through the Liebster Award 2017!

Thanks so much Melissa for this nomination! We’re strong, independent women who don’t need no man to handle our finances! Any blog that is here to empower women is an excellent blog in my book. And here are the questions you asked me:

What is the sentence that stopped you in your path and changes your life completely?

I didn’t really enjoy high school and purposely picked a school several states away to really start over. I was kinda surprised when I still felt the same way 18 months later and that was when I realized “no matter where you go, you are still you”. That’s when I decided to come back home to finish school, find a psychiatrist, and start therapy. That was when I changed my life and started my journey to managing my mental health and becoming the healthiest version of myself.

What does success means to you?

Success seems to really point toward career in my opinion. And a successful career to me, would mean being one of the best in your field and being well known for your talent. Perhaps you also have a great salary and win awards, that definitely sounds like the promise of success.

What do you need to let go of?

Melissa, my god you go right for the heart don’t you?! Hm, I need to let go the fear of failing. I need to become more comfortable making mistakes in front of others and learn to not fear rejection from others.

What is the best advice you will give your youngest self?

This one is easiest enough, I would tell her to get into therapy sooner. And OMG, STOP TALKING TO BOYS WHO DON’T DESERVE YOU!

What is your biggest financial mistake?

I don’t know if mistake is the best word, but in retrospect, I definitely think it would have been smarter to save money and go to community college for two years and then finish up my degree at a more expensive school for the last two years. I think High Schoolers are really unaware of all the college expenses and it should become more popular to save money by going to community college.

What is the best life pieces of advice someone gives to you

The best pieces of life advice I’ve received were “treat yourself like you treat your friends” and “think of the worst that can happen, can you handle that?”. The first has been helpful in being kinder to myself and crediting my positives more so I don’t dwell on the negatives. That’s still very much a work in progress but it really stops me in my tracks when I’m explaining a situation and being negative and she says “well if your friend had this same problem what would you say” and my attitude immediately changes to be more supportive. The second piece is more of an anxiety tactic. I worry quite a lot and you would think that imagining the worst would only increase my anxiety. But I allow myself a minute to indulge in all that can go wrong and then I ask myself if I could live with it and surprisingly, most of the time I say yes and begin to feel better. Trip, sweat, and fumble over my words during a presentation? Sounds like just a regular human who makes mistakes and an event the class is likely to forget in a week. Get rejected or dumped by the cute guy? Wouldn’t be the first time and I’m still here standing, ready to try again. You’re capable of much more than you think, and stronger too.

What is your singular goal in life?

This is easy too, to be happy and healthy. Healthy to me means managing my mental health issues and exercising to keep my body from aging too quickly. Happy to me means feeling strong connections to those close to me (such as my sisters and significant other) and being fulfilled by my passion for writing and purpose with working.

  1. I did my first 2 years at community college and transferred to a 4 year school for my junior and senior years… best decision EVER! Instead of graduating in debt worth a mortgage on a house, I have a small car payment every month on my student loans.

I will say, I’ve preached this advice to many friends, and have often been met with the undertones of ‘but that’s for poor people.’ I don’t agree, ’cause ya know, any college, community and otherwise are freakin’ expensive! It really is a smart way to go!

Oh, and one of my front teeth is fake too! I slipped in a bathroom at daycare when I was a kid.

    1. Yes exactly why it’s so much smarter! I wish it was considered more normal and popular and people were less judgmental about it. The only people I could see still disagreeing with it are the ones that LOVED college and never wanted to leave.

hahah omg twins! It sucks now because like every 5 years I rechip one of them on hard food or something and have to get it fixed again.
